Pay The Piper.

today i was watching the latest episode of Comic Book Men on my lunch break. this show is amazing if you don't already know. quite hilarious and insightful. the basic premise is cameras in a comic book store, Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash, owned by film genius Kevin Smith. you get some behind-the-scenes into the world of the store with everything from promotional antics to negotiating sales of comics and memorabilia to outdoor hockey games with the staff. this episode in particular had a zombie twist in it that prompted me with inspiration to draw a zombie of my own. after Ming's failed attempt @ a store promotion, i felt fitting to title this piece as i did.

Surfacing.

too often we as people live in fear. fear of the unknown, the what if's, the endless possibilities of this ever-changing life we live. so much that we allow fear to hold us back. to prevent us from reaching our full potential as conscious beings. we swim in the murky waters of life. knowing there is something else beyond the water, yet too scared for fear of burning in the sun above the surface of said waters. to this i say nay. choose not fear, for as many infinitely possible negatives that may be on the other side of the water, there are an equal number of positive possibilities. the sun may burn you but it may equally heal you and brighten your life. i urge people to take a chance on life and trust in the inherent knowledge of your inner and outer being. all as one.

so i been drawing a bit these passed two nights trying a new color of ink in my pens. the first two were this need to draw robots. couldn't seem to shake it. the last one i did while watching & listening to Fulfill The Dream, one of my favorite skate videos of all time. thank the universe for YouTube!! lol. i did not do an exact likeness of Steve Olson, but i did use him as a reference for the face as well as other bits from the video and music in this piece as well.

the latest addition to the store, the "Evolve Or Die" Face sticker. i drew this sticker out @ our weekly spot last year, Art Vibes. i was trying out some new Krink markers and created this beastly thing from an idea i had been thinking about for a few years. the idea behind Evolve Or Die is simple..evolution of the self--the mind, body, and soul--is important to our growth as a species. if we do not evolve, we fall off. Earth and nature are always growing and changing, so it only makes sense that we do the same. improve ourselves through education, through growing business opportunities, meditation practices, expanding our skills..the ways we can evolve are literally ENDLESS. support the idea of evolving yourself and thus evolving the whole!!

so the yesterday i reached out to my Facebook friends in hopes of getting some ideas for my lunchtime drawings. this is something i enjoi doing quite often. its a great way to get some new, fresh ideas as one can get into some pretty linear thinking without realizing it. you already know what you like to draw or can draw well, so it's a good way to get some new thinking, outside of your own box so to speak. so Friday a slew of amazing ideas came thru as i was tippin on my Bacardi Gold and one stood out in particular.. someone mentioned Go-Bots and Wu in the same sentence. how could i pass up the idea of combining both!? ish was GENIUS, so thanks to mister Contra. take a look @ his work too while your giving him his kudos, dudes is a sic artist.

for this piece, i actually did something out of my ordinary. i cleaned up some inks in Photoshop. now some purists would say it's cheating. i say to them i didn't want to bother with my whiteout. so nerts to you and cheers to everyone!!

there are many times in my life where i feel surrounded by vultures. people that love to wait around in your lowest moments, waiting for you to stop breathing..to crack under the pressure, then swoop down to feast on the body that almost made it. i see these and buzzards quite a bit since moving and working this far out of the city's more urban areas. there's something so appealing to the eyes and spirit, watching these things fly overhed on a commute to and from job. even considering their more "sinister" plans, i still enjoi watching them take flight and swooping down low. and these things get CLOSE out here. street level @ times. where honking doesn't persuade them any stronger to move out the way. i see so many of these, often times i feel i may be cursed. (not seriously of course). it's a fine waiting game these animals play, and sometimes these humans play. there's something so draining of these birds, even though their prey is dead before eating. sucking the last bits before there is nothing but bone to be withered and eroded away..

still, @ times i find myself surrounded by these "animals", waiting around for others to fall off and feed off of their spirit. i am by no means a vulture. and refuse to be food for one either. enjoi the graceful flight of these creatures, but remember..if you see too many, something is about to perish..and it might be you....it may also just be a test....

perhaps even, a person's experimental Placebo Effect..

this morning i was working thru a bit of frustration and decided to draw. i usually try not to draw when im in a sour mood but something compelled me to draw, so i did. in the midst of this drawing i decided to pick up a pencil. for those who follow my work, you know this is highly unorthodox lol. for those unfamiliar, understand i spent many years dreaming of drawing comics in the vein of the greats like Campbell (J. Scott), Turner (Michael, RIParadise), and Lee (Jim) and spent far too many years forcing perfection from myself. the passed two years i've let go of that need. as a result, i've hardly used a pencil for any of my drawings or paintings and its been quite the liberation. inks are so much more permanent and kinda force you to get in that creative and accepting zones.

anyway, as i stated, i don't normally like drawing in this mood. i feel it would affect my work negatively (many will disagree), but eventually the lines began to flow rather easily and drawing with a traditional pencil again, after the fact, was rather enjoiable. i've been wanting to explore my shape process a lot more so this was kinda dipping my toes in said waters. eventually this odd face appeared on my page, holding a stack of money. money is an interesting idea. yes idea. see money is such a driving force in our societies today, there are few cultures that live without some sort of monetary system. not to be confused with a barter system, understand.

traditional money is meaningless. worthless. and only has the worth we believe it to have. its really an amazing topic i could talk ears off of elephants about, but i wont bother for the moment. the point is, as crucial as money is to our lifestyles, life is short. and there are more important things in life than money. just remember that as you progress as a human being and conscious spirit.

whuddup tho!! back up in it like a stripper thong with the first colors of 2012, boy. haha. hope you all are having a great year so far, 2012 has been really good so far. like im in Strangeland, it goes up baby. anyway, i was poking thru Tumblr the other day and came across a dope image that sparked this one (pun intended). i dont dig smokers but couldn't pass the appeal of this one up. i wanted to use a cool, flat color scheme for this one. and i had to include some BG imagery too so i posted a keyboard and some hip hop flavor. feels like this could easily be my room haha!! the lighting was a bit tricky, used a bit of Google and my own logic to nail it down close i could without proper reference (or training lol).

also, after a little research, i finally learned the halftone technique i had been looking for all last year. ironically its a similar technique to something we use @ the 95 a couple times a month lol. how i overlooked this one, i have no idea, but i got it down now so thats all that matters.

finally, to any girls smokin in the bedroom--ash that shit in a tray, don't drop no cherries in my sheets, and clothing is always optional. cheers!!

i recently had this idea for a story.... i started drawing one day and it started to flow all on its own, unexpectedly. i started to realize it was a story that needed to be drawn, and not just an illustration. so i wrote and drew, wrote and drew..until it was done. i easily saw how i wanted the images colored insiede my hed. shortly after, i drew this image of Kabuki. i have been immersed in David Mack's work lately after meeting him in San Diego for Tr!ckster this passed summer. he gave me some books of his and after reading them, i became enamored in his style. his flow. i bought more @ Wizard World in the fall, i couldn't (and still can't) get enough of his work.

i began expanding my own ideas and approaches to art. so having all this imagery in my conscious, i began to see my art change. including the story mentioned above. after drawing this Kabuki, i realized i wanted to paint it, digitally. and try some new techniques out of my comfort zone. in the moments of painting it [Kabuki], i realized i was using this as practice for my next big project (the story), to be released in the next month or so after Delayed. Sleep. Phaze. Number 2. expect work like this, only ELEVATED. i'm so excited for the new year and the new ideas i plan to bring into reality and release this year. so stay tuned!!

well, it was a long time coming and i thank everyone for their support. Delayed. Sleep. Phaze. Number 1 has been sold out for about a month and with Delayed. Sleep. Phaze. Number 2 in pre-press stages i felt i would share all the images with those who weren't able to grab a copy. you may recognize a couple images but most were never-before-seen illustrations i created specifically for this book. most of these images are from late 2010. DSP #2 is all new, unseen material from this year, so look for it in the web store within the next week or so. really shootin' before xmas.

sooo for those who dont follow my facebook or twitter, i have been posting little snippets of info about the release of Delayed. Sleep. Phaze. #2. the entire layout process was a BREEZE this time around. having done one already, i had all the measurements and margins ready to go, i jus had to drop in the images. MUCH less stressful. i have been collecting drawings in little sketchbooks all year for this book particularly. so this book is BRAND NEW, only a handful of people have seen the images. it has been on simmer on a back burner all year, adding spices and such as the months went by. i drew up the cover this week and i gotta say this one is gonna blow the last one out the water. i had a lot of fun putting this one together and should be released in less than 2 weeks. official release date real soon, but WILL BE BEFORE XMAS so get your orders in asap to receive it by then (or jus meet me up if youre in the city). peace to all and stay warm, i'll be outside cold chillin on the block enjoiing SATX's short winter break.

Phaze. as i officially sold my last one this weekend. it was a fun journey watching the idea form from a seed, grow into a physical book, and then cultivated by those who purchased one, won one, traded for one, or just stole one from your loved ones. having said that, i feel i can spill the beans (from the proverbial cup, of course) and say that i have already been working on DSP #2 all year and started the layout process this passed weekend in hopes of an early-to-mid-December release. this book will again be chock full of brand new, unreleased illustrations for your peepers.

Number Two is 100% unseen material and will be guaranteed to leave your jaws dropped in pure amazement and/or disgust. sleeplessness, hip hop-funk, alcohol-induced delusions, naked girls, and free thinking all went into the illustrations of this book so expect the expected unexpected and expect it in your face semi-unexpectedly. the book will follow the same format and size (20 pages, 5" x 8", B&W) and will most likely be same price ($10 shipped or $7 in person). however, i will be throwing in extra goodies like free stickers. this book will also contain some new flavor from a fellow artist friend sure to rock your socks like a banger on the block.

so yesterday i posted an illustration i did of Tech N9ne on Melodic Measures, my weekly music-inspired art blog, only to realize i flipped the IX to XI when i created it. i didn't catch it initially and sat on the illustration for a while. a couple weeks later (yesterday) i decided to post it. i hadn't posted anything new in a while. it was also Tech's born day and the date of his newest release "Welcome To Strangeland". so how fitting the stars lined up for this one. i posted it on Facebook and tagged Tech in it...

i got a lot of heat from fellow Tech fans. lots of "its Tech N9ne, not Tech Eleven", "idiot", and "he's not a real fan". wow. lol. this might upset some people. i, however, embrace my mistakes in the same vein as Tech. and decided not to 'shop it and fix it. i got a TON of praise even with the XI. and thats dope. in fact, last i checked, its @ over 700 Likes. how a mistake equates to not being a "real fan" is just one of those things you have to accept from the diehards.

the point i'm making is just do what is insiede you. embrace who you are, learn from your mistakes, and push on. cuz obviously a lot of people will over look the little things, your flaws & mistakes, and see the bigger picture. such as the passion i put into the piece, even in the small window of time i had to create it. it doesn't make me any less of a fan for fucking up a Roman numeral. in fact, it solidifies my support in him and his messages that i didn't remove the post or "fix" it.

The Pursuit of Outstanding Success.

for many months now, having immersed myself in the art world of pursuing self-employment through art, i found myself being asked time and time again what my "secret" was to selling, to creating, to staying so headstrong through it all. and through it all, three answers always came up and were always left as a bit of a noodle-scratcher to most who asked me this; self-discipline, perseverance, and sacrifice. simple. so simple yet, when I answer this, people tend to get confused. the thing is, it is those three things that will get you through anything in life, really. having lived by these three ideas for basically my entire life, I always still found trouble explaining to people the details. until I came upon this article from Behance. if you’re an artist and are not on Behance already, I highly suggest you get on it. today. it isn’t your standard portfolio website, I’ve come to find. there are tons of resources and the work there is amazing. so much so that I am very selective myself of what I upload to it versus say this website or even facebook. but that’s off the topic.

the point I am making is that I received this article through the email newsletter, which I have been making a point to carefully read after sifting through some other nuggets of golden information in passed newsletters. and it goes into deep detail about self-control, sacrifice, success, criticism, diligence, and the connection between them all. I was so amazed that someone was able to put it into words finally because let’s face it—I certainly didn’t want to make the time to do so. with art shows, client work, the 95, personal creations, family, friends, social meetings, guilty pleasures, domestic duties like dreadful dishes or laundry, entertainment, food, hygiene, discovering the next exoplanet, and so on—I just didn’t ever make the time explain my “simple” self-discipline and sacrifice model of how I live my life. but I feel this article does a very fine tuned job of explaining how I even got this far in not just the art world, but in life as a whole; my experience as a human being.

the interesting thing is I still learned from this. even when I thought I had it figured out. I realized perhaps the self-discipline aspect of my path wasn’t as responsible for as much as I thought. of course, I could be wrong about that as well. the thing is guys, very often, I don’t know what I am doing. however I do believe it comes from an inherent part in all of us that I have been able to tap into through self-discipline and meditation. and not even realizing it. the rest I just kinda found through self-exploration and overall trying to understand the world around me in this human experience.

I hope you all have made it this far and I certainly hope you read the following articles thoroughly and carefully to better understand the previous ramblings. there are so many ideas in these two articles that will help you overcome any obstacle in your career and possibly in your very life. learn to apply these ideas from others’ outstanding success into your own pursuit of success and you will see the “secret” to being successful and thereby we will all be successing (to speak in the vein of Murs). the wonderful part is, if you can apply these tenements, ANYONE can be successful. and not that i am nowhere NEAR the level of success i want to achieve so be forewarned when you ask how i got to this level of success because it is always growing and i am always looking to evolve as an artist and a person. so my level of success today will not be the same as it will be tomorrow.

some pieces i was working on the other night before an interview. this whole Martial ArtSlam! has got me on a big Asian culture kick right now. so heres some Japanese style women. the first is just a random image of a woman a man could find @ a bathhouse. so i wanted to give here paler skin like a geisha but have her hair down. the second is an opposite of sorts, a woman that knows her way around a kitana and gi. a warrior and not so much a "lover" (used very loosely here lol). so its a duality of sorts in the culture.

found this piece from a First Friday i did a few months ago but forgot to post it. wasn't really sure what was gpoing on here other than this is a result of Lateralus blasting thru my hedphones. something about Tool's music always sparks interesting ideas in my works. i decided to paint white lines to symbolize meridians. i obviously don't know the exact maplines so its done here thru a symbol rather than accurate linework. i decided to give the girl three eyes, all wide open..there are two [perhaps eyes] @ the bottom corners that seemed to just fit as i was creating this. it was very odd having this particularly spiritual piece in a live art setting. whatever the case, i'm sure there is more in this piece i am currently overlooking...

so the other night i drew this little mean muggin Earthworm Jim and decided to opt for the digital colors instead of the simple pencil colors i was gonna use. once i began laying the base colors on break time @ job i got mad extited!! i was having so much fun it was flowing really nicely. and FAST!! which is somethin i enjoi about these flatter, simplified colors. before i would take mad hours coloring, adding gradients, blurs, etc.. it became a chore almost and an obsessive one i might add lol. now i actually have a lot of fun coloring digitally so expect a lot more in the future. cheers.

this is the art i did for 4 Elements #2 last night. shit was mad dope. good turnout and good vibes. i was painting alongside this cat named DABS who was ill wit the aerosol and iller wit the shirt game. looking forward to seeing more of this guys finer (canvas) art. the night's only downfall was the humidity but its SATX, its to be expected. a cipher broke out as we were painting which is always dope anywhere, anytime. i wanted to keep this piece in theme with the night and stuck to graffiti, only in my style as i am in no way a graffiti artist. i just love the shit and utilize it in my work. i had a great night and Certain Sickness definitely put on a good show. i'm looking forward to getting more heds out to this monthly spot. WE NEED MORE DANCERS!! so see yall there next month..

live art from Art Vibes this week. i had this idea for a mecha wasp-type creature and this little guy came out. not quite how i saw it in my hed but still fun to create. and ive gotten good feedback on it already so thats dope. wanted to keep the lines a bit crisper than usual given subject matter but the texture of canvas was too rough so i added a little energetic flavor to it. i had fun with this cuz i learned something too..i always wondered the difference between hornets, wasps, and bees. so the extra time for a little research was mad fresh to learn about these creatures and their differences.

here is the art i did for our first night back @ Art Vibes. it was a great night with a really great turnout. we had a couple hiccups but overall it was good to be back on it. lots of old faces and new faces came out to chill and to paint. lots of people bought art and it was a great night overall. the first piece is Mugen of Samurai Champloo. i been really diggin this show a lot since a friend turned me on to it and been watching the entire series bit by bit. the second piece is the first of a new series im working on but wil only be posting this one. the rest are top secret until they are finished!! rest assured they're gonna be mad different and this one is a predecessor of whats to come.

A Bit MIA But I'm Back!!

alright so for a week or so I've been slightly off the grid getting some mad hours of work in. here's what I've been up to..

I went to San Diego!! after mad preparation and hustle, i got myself squared away and me and Rabbit hopped on the road to Cali. Comic Con was in full effect BUT--I did not go for Comic Con. I went to something FAR better. a little event called Tr!ckster. for the last five years or so, for those who do not follow, Comic Con has become less and less about comics and more and more about Hollywood. many artists have even dubbed it Culture Con. Artists' Alley (the area where all the comic artists invited set up for signings and selling) has become a pathetic, tucked away little corner of the mass event. a few artists got together to make a change and thus, Tr!ckster was born. Tr!ckster is a creator-owned place where artists (predominantly of the comic book realm) can come together and reconnect with what the true meaning of Comic Con WAS. they are allowed to sell their own products, projects, and art that stays off the mainstream radar, with enough space and comfort to make it an enjoiable experience.

but Tr!ckster is much more as well!! during the day, fans were able to sit in on symposia to learn many different techniques on anything needed to start your own book. character design, storytelling, transition into film--all taught by artists who have been in the field for quite some time. artists like Scott Morse (Pixar), Skottie Young (Marvel, Oz), Food One (Clerks, Grrl Scouts), King Gum (Scarface, Puffed), Mike Mignola (Hellboy) and many others were the teachers here. and yes I am totally name-dropping. but it's THAT important to understand how meaningful all this is. big names in the industry came thru EVERYDAY for this event. @ any moment, you could be sitting outside enjoiing the cool San Diego breeze with any number of artists.

as for every evening, the retail shop basically turned into a full out bar where artists and fans alike can hang out, have some drinks, and converse more closely with each other. sounds dope right? it got better. every night the venue also turned into a drawing class complete with live models who knew what they were doing and posing in true comic form; dynamic cover art type stuff. themed nights kept these models in lingerie, toting guns, and even donning barbaric wardrobe. and if that wasn't enough, you could easily find yourself drawing alongside artists like dancing machine David Mack (Kabuki, Dexter's Dark Echo webisodes) and cucumber cool Dave Crosland on a nightly basis or even catching Mike Allred's (Madmen) band The Gear or a DJ set from Jim Mahfood and his homie Sven (both whom KILLED it). oh and did I mention Tom Morello stopped in for an intimate acoustic set? yeah. THE Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine fame, in promotions of his new book Orchid published by Dark Horse, came out and ROCKED a sic sic set. and have i mentioned all but the symposia was FREE!!?? THIS is Tr!ckster yall.

I cannot begin to express how wonderful the entire trip was. when we weren't @ Tr!ckster we were wandering around the area scoping out Comic Con flavor outside of the event. we came up on so much free junk on the streets alone. we visited a pizza place turned Adventure Time, played some Street Fighter vs. Tekken outside, visited the Chuck Jones art gallery (where I saw I super sic JIM LEE x ALEX ROSS piece as well as Dr. Seuss and Peanuts art). there was an Art of Conan exhibit, a Sega Arcade, a South Park themed Dragon Dance, there was even an intersection of downtown that was transformed into South Park!! complete with an Art of South Park gallery that had original cells with construction paper!! crazy. so many awesome costumes as well. i even caught a glimpse of this cat wit silver paint, hed to toe, and a massive silver surfboard. and the beach was fantaaaastic!!

there's so much to tell but i think i can stop there. i will let the photos and video tell the rest and believe me i got MAD flavor on this one. and unfortunately, Rabbit and i had to miss ArtSlam! for this one but best BELIEVE we STILL rocked it out there!! we had our own little ArtSlam! session and yeah we kept with the Pixels vs. Panels theme. it wasn't the same without all the homies and new talent, and we were both kinda down, but we still got some great work out of it. so be ready. i also got a ton of illustrations done i will upload all of that art soon. oh, and i came up on a GRIP of free books from the symposia and bought a little bit of thangs from the retail shop. all in all, everyone i met was so humble but truly stood by there work 100%--a difficult combination to balance.

lastly, i wanna give some shout outs.. first to my new writer homie Krys for letting us crash with him and for being such a great person all around. we all got mad drunk @ the Marriot and the Hyatt and weren't even staying @ either one!! next i wanna send a HUMONGOUS thanks to Scott Morse for being the face of Tr!ckster and making it such an incredible experience. to Tom Morello for blessing me with something way more rare than any Rage Against The Machine concert. then of course Food, Gum, Jane Dope and their whole crew including new friends Sven, Man-Chunk, Steven, Heather, and Carlos. they were some great people to hang with. oh and Penguino!!--she was cool as fuck. also thanks to David Mack for the free autographed books and a Dexter sketch i wasn't able to pick up. so bummed for that one but these things happen. a BIG props to the symposia panels i attended featuring Scott Morse, Skottie Young, Scott C., Brian McDonald, Food, Gum, Fabio Moon, Jill Thompson, and others. there was so much going on, as i remember i will add to a separate post. thanks to anyone who bought any of my art within tha last month or so, i stacked it all up as much as possible for this trip. THANK YOU. a SUPER big thanks to the homie LaLa who is residing in Arizona and let us shower & sleep there on our road trip; your family is so incredible, i wish we coulda stayed longer, and yo bring Billy out here to SATX already!! lastly a big thanks to the City of San Diego.. you are such a BEAUTIFUL city with super fly hunnies and mad healthy people. it was so hard to leave, i cannot wait to be there again. oh!!--and shout outs to Little Italy for some INCREEEDIBLE food and service @ Landini's and Fillipi's. i will miss your food the most of all the places we were fortunate enough to eat @ while we were there.

Blue Moon Promotionals. Pt. 1

here are some progress shots of a painting i did for HEB and Blue Moon last weekend. i was hired for some live art in an HEB while Blue Moon promoted their seasonal flavor of beer. a summer ale i believe. the painting went really smooth and quik and it was an interesting place to be painting. the theme was Texas Summer and Blue Moon so i painted a Blue Moon and an orange tubin' down one of the many Texas rivers, a true Texan's favorite pass-time. the client and Blue Moon were both happy with the end result and @ the end of the day thats what counts in this line of work. but i did enjoi painting this as well and thats always a plus. i approached it in a different style all together but still incorporated a lot of my energetic lines and strokes to keep it in my particular form. i got another one tomorrow so hopefully i can get those fliks up sooner this go-around. don't ever underestimate a corporate gig. though challenging, they can provide some interesting results, network opportunities, and great payoffs. this was we call that eazy money yo.

so its almost time!! Delayed.Sleep.Phaze., the long awaited mini art book/comic/zine thing by yours truly, is here!! the books are all printed, the extra goodies are all done, all thats left is the custom numbering/extra flavor which will be done this weekend!! i will post sunday night or monday morning about ordering info, pricing, etc.. this art book is SUPER limited (i'm talking less than 50!!) and ready for your viewing pleasure.

this idea is originally inspired by one of my favorite artists of all time, Jim Mahfood aka FOOD ONE and his book "Scum of The Earth". having picked up both of his Scum books, i decided to do my own in the same fashion (until i can find a more personal format). i've always wanted to do a little mini magazine type thing and FOOD has the ability to always show how simple it is to do all the things in the art world i've always wanted to do. mad inspiring, dude always has a way of not just showing me how i can do all the things i've always wanted to do in art, but that i can do them with minimal struggle. even if he doesn't do it directly, jus following this cat online one can learn a lot. check him out on the regular, you'll see what i mean. so big props to FOOD ONE.

anyway, this book is a collection of illustrations from the end of 2010 and beginning of 2011. ALL NEW work with maybe one exception. i did this guerilla style, self-published, all hand illustrations and text (minus the interview type). 18 and up steeze with 20 pages and measuring roughly 5" x 8", all will be hand numbered with a little illustration insiede and each cover will have some extra flavor as well, making each one super super one-of-a-kind (another FOOD idea). so its no joke when i say SUPER LIMITED. this will more than likely be a one-time print but if they do really well and there is enough demand, i may print up a second edition of volume 1 with something new to differ it from the first edition. but i'm not sold on that idea completely.

here are some paintings i had locked away for a minute and now have time to post. the first is a random boxer, complete with 137 knockouts. i wanted to give it a fight night poster feel. soo yeah, pretty gangster. i painted this on an insert i got with my light bill.

the second is a shark wit a fat gold chain i painted on a Clogged Caps 7 poster. i've been quite fixated on sea creatures lately, namely sharks. i dunno, sharks swimming around the deep sea wearing people chains and a menacing grin..seems even scarier than a reggo shark.

ArtSlam! Star Wars Edition Pt. 1 (sketch cards)

Deadbeat Hero had a dope idea for this ArtSlam!--he had a blank spot on the back of the flyer for the Star Wars show for all the patrons to give to the artists and take home a free piece of art, comic-con style!! here are all the sketch cards i did. i fell behind on my paintings doing these, but i had so much fun making them. i met a lot of cool cats through these and it was a really great idea on Deadbeat's part. look for this idea to pop up in another ArtSlam! in the near future.

all these were done on cardstock with inks and a bit of aerosol on some.

ArtVibes provided some excellent collabs the other night. the vibes truly were flowing and we had a great turnout of artists and patrons. its becoming a tight-knit group with each show and should definitely NOT be missed. i can't make it to every show but when i can its always a blast and always a dope showcase of some great SATX talent.

colors.

so a couple weeks [or so] ago i posted a preview of what i had been working on that day. and well, heres the final product. the linework is a digital trace of a photo i imported into one of my digital programs. i don't do this technique often, but @ times i do when i'm in a real rush and/or want it to be really accurate/proportionate. sometimes i jus want things to look a certain way.

anywho, i placed that watermark in Ps and then came back to my first program to color. its a painter program called ArtRage 2 Deluxe we have @ job. really dope and its less expensive then say some of the high-ends like Painter or CS5. so tho these styles/strokes may be done elsewhere and better, i'm still able to make my digital paints @ a lesser price til i can afford such software. i colored this in a couple hours or less (i am by far not an advanced colorist/digital painter lol) and then took it in back into Ps to add some blurs and blends. the final result is a pretty fly lookin chick with a mix of warm and cool tertiary colors.

memories fade, but some find their way back into your mind through other means.

420 Smoke No. 2.

live art from The Big Texas 420Fest. show was dope as fuck and lots of fun. great artists, lots of free shit was given away including vaporizer and bongs, and some great music as well including Black Note and Lotus Tribe. i been seeing Lotus Tribe for a minute and this was by far one of their tightest sets i've seen. dudes have gotten better each time i see them, make sure you check em out HERE and add their FB HERE. anyway, i was feeling a bit sluggish that night (and no, i don't smoke before you place blame lol) and wasn't planning on finishing it but ended up catching a second wind to complete it. people seem to dig it and i had fun creating this green babe. she can smoke me out any day, i'll make the exception!! all colors are aerosol and then i laid inks on top. painting with aerosol @ smaller sizes is tricky but i'm having fun taking this challenge hed on. piece measures 24" x 24" and i will build a really sic frame for it soon.

smoke responsibly fuckers, i'm out there on them roads too. in fact, if you do smoke, don't be a lazy ass smoker. change the world and impact it with positivity!! change the world's perspective on this plant.

so @ our weekly spot ArtVibes i havent had much time to build frames for my paintings so i been relaxing on the couches of Studio 13 pumping out these ink works. these are always fun and sometimes its good to step back form the "live" part and just kinda mellow out. all these pieces are inks-only (no pencils) on mixed media paper, 14" x 17". the Buddha was done using a photo a friend sent me, Unrelenting Smile was a friend of mine who showed up last week to the event, and Justene is a photo i had on hand of Justene Jaro's fine ass.

so its the time again, time to keep everyone in the loops (yes, loopS) that is my crazy ass life. my art book/mini comic/zine thing is finally seeing an end!! i have laid out out over half the pages and its looking pretty sweet all together. all the images are locked in and might only change out one to include a body art photo. and gotta double-check my margins with the printer this weekend. other than that, its basically done y'all!! having said all that, i will leak the title of this book and maaaybe a sneak peek @ the cover. so keep on your seat's edge and prepare for some new art to tickle your ocular sockets!!

i was set up @ the DMC competition Saturday night and started drawing to pass time. show took forever to get started but once it did it was BANGIN'. i sold a couple of pieces and had fun talking to the kids there about my work. Frank Dukes fucking KILLED it and i'm pretty bummed he lost, dude had MAD crowd participation, speed, agility, and overall dopeness. you got my vote homie!!

so here are [phone] fliks of the pieces we did for Clogged Caps this weekend (more, better qualitiy pics on the way). an AMAZING weekend for sure. WERD, Rabbit, and i did a collab @ Pedicab on saturday. i fucked around and started drinking (sometimes its hard to pass up free hooch!) and fucked up the bottom of our piece tryna rush out of there to make it in time to paint @ Luminaria as well. sooo i had to come back on Sunday to fix it as i couldn't sleep that night thinking about it lol. then on Sunday afternoon i was blessed and offered a spot with WERD @ The Yard walls for CC. soooo amazing to share a space with those writers and artists. mad mad talent and skills. shout outs to all who came out and to all the amazing artwork and creative energies shared.

BIG thanks to Cien, Supher, and LAWS RTD and Pedicab for having us out @ the event. it was an amazing experience, i learned a lot, and enjoied the shows i was able to attend. i've always had a high level of respect for graff writers but it jus got elevated again this weekend..

RABBIT x AESOP x BLUZILLA ONE

so @ the Expresion de los Sentidos show Rabbit brought along this massive piece of wood she swooped up from somewhere. it sits just over 5 feet tall and two fee twide and is arched @ the top. it looks almost as if it was part of a bar @ once or something. so she got to work and eventually asked Aesop and myself to jump on it and so we all started adding our own flavor on this thing. the end result came out suuuper dope and has been getting a really great response.

the three of us have been doing so many shows together these passed six months we've formed a pretty tight bond. we're always helping each other out, buy and trading each other's art, and overall jus learning from one another. its been really fly, Rabbit and Aesop are really fantastic artists and even greater people. its always a good time when we paint together and Rabbit and I have even been talking about starting mad projects in this city. 2011 takeover is seeing fruition with each passing day so watch the fuck out yo!!

Sea Floor from Revive Sessions #1 and Drunken Flow from #2. the first was probably my worst show yet, i wasn't feeling it @ all. it was windy as shit, i didn't have my own canvas, and none of the paint was driving fast enough for me to do anything. i actually buffed that Sea Floor twice that night. eventually i started spraying color on it and saw this girl's seahorse tattoo and chunked one on there. it came out pretty good i guess for being all spray paint (minus the white) on a tiny ass 16" x 20" canvas. these Revive Sessions shows are starting to grow and getting pretty dope. tonight is #3 and i'm anxious to see who else comes out and wrecks shop.

Dessa's Word was a last minute decision to do the make-up show @ the Jalapeno and turned out being a pretty good night. can't beat free beer ya know. Dessa is this dope ass MC/singer/poet from a group called Doomtree. her solo work is AMAZING and this was a particularly moving night for me. i sold half my work and even gave some away. i also got to reconnect wit my home Nemo again who's been traveling the country doing art shows. so that was dope.

and Eyes On The New was the piece i did @ the Expresion de los Sentidos show. show was a bit different from what i'm used to but overall was still ok. seemed there were more artists than patrons and none of us sold anything but a sic collab came about that night. i'll post that next.

first was a result of listening to S.C.I.E.N.C.E. on repeat way too much lol. so its basically this guy trapped in a tube of green fluid, most likely as part of an experiment. Incubus can conjure up some crazy ass imagery with their early shit. the newer stuff like say Morning View, thats my mellow out rec and Grenades is just much more energetic and emotional. Forget is a result of staring @ Food's new Jen & the Schroom Holograms piece too long and also my saying fuckit and reverting back to my grade-school years and buying some cheap ass color pencils for like two and a half dollars @ the hobby store and just having fun. i also bought some colored paper to fux wit when i get a chance, so the colored pencils are waiting for that paper, that was the whole drive behind coppin em.

here are my pieces i did for the Art Slam 5th Anniversary which was awesome beyond words!! seriously, Food One (Jim Mahfood) and King Gum (Dave Crosland) KILLED it. really cool dudes too, always good to meet such great talent that isn't super ego-inflated. i'll post pics of the show soon. my partner MOSZ documented the entire event on film with video, audio, photos, and interviews with the audience and participants and we even scored an exclusive interview with Food and Gum!! be on the look out in the next couple of weeks, theres about 5-6 hours of footage total to sift thru and edit.

so last night i was collecting all my illustrations for layout. literally, i laid them all out on the floor. doing about 18-20 total and maybe some photos as well, all black and white. it looks dope seeing all the images laid out like that. i had to use some place holders as a couple aren't done yet, but overall its gonna be a menacing piece of work.

i apologize for the serious delay, but life comes @ you in many forms in all directions and many times @ the "wrong" times. between art shows, commissions, live arts, my day job, my car quitting on me, my apartment hassles, and overall semi-daily illustrations and paintings, the book just kept getting pushed further and further back..

BUT!!--it looks like i'm DEAD ON TRACK for no later than first half of February release, barring any unforeseen circumstances. i am really pushing to have it done by the next Art Slam (which the inspirations Food One and King Gum will be attending to rock with us as well. DOPE).

this book IS self published, so i gotta make sure my lights are on and that i'm eating before i can release this, feel me? and it certainly isn't gonna be a half-assed piece of junk. i'd rather it be late and absolutely dope than to be released in November [2010] like i originally intended and having it look and feel unfinished and rushed. so be easy, its coming!!

all in all i'm excited for this project and really have the above mentioned to thank. them dudes hustle pretty much on that dolo tip and hey i'm as uno as they come. so it seemed fitting to finally release my own little mini-comic that i've wanted to do for like the passed 8 years or so. that inspiration came @ a great time and now i'm ready to start making bigger moves. so thanks Food and Gum, can't wait to paint it up @ Art Slam in a couple weeks, here in San Antonio!!

over the xmas break i got a sudden urge to pick up my pencil and draw. for those who know me or my work, then you know i hardly even pick a pencil up anymore. not that i'm by any means cocky or anything, its just that i got tired of drawing like this for the simple fact that it made me an extreme perfectionist and illustrating became a sever frustration and is probably the biggest reason why i took a break for so long. drawing in predominantly ink has let me let go of my need for perfection and be more accepting of my flaws in my work and even push myself to overcome them and evolve as an artist.

however i still use my pencil from time to time, mostly when drawing females i've found. and over the xmas break i had sudden inspiration. after eating some awesome tamales (mmmm!!), i grabbed a photo of a friend and started to hit the page..and a little over an hour i had some pencils i was happy with. i inked it later in random moments over the next week @ the dayjob and scanned it in.

i then opened Photoshop and got to work. and didn't like any of it, so i scrapped it and proceeded to open my other "painter" program, ArtRage 2 Deluxe. this is an awesome program that mimics brushes quite well and lets you even control thinners. i'm sure CS5 has all this neat stuff as well but we don't live in a perfect world and there simply isn't room in the budget for that right now lol.

anywho, i got to painting one day and finished up today. i used the blue BG for good contrast against the orange/reds i used for the flesh tones and highlights. eventually it came out as it did and i am pleased. there's still a lot to learn in this art world and so i always push myself to learn techniques and programs. this painting was much faster than slappin it on a canvas (and more proportional too haha. i always have trouble enlarging things so it was kinda cool to give it that paint-stroke feel on a digital tablet.). overall it was fun and the pencils probably took the longest. or maybe i'm just saying that cuz i did em in one sitting and the inks and colors over multiple sessions. i dunno.
